Happy Thanksgiving to all! Some of you may already know that I am a New Yorker born and bred. My favorite time to go back and visit friends and family is always this holiday. The city is just starting to get festive, the weather is usually cooperative (not this trip though!), and the holiday excitement is just beginning! I went back as a semi tourist this time. I took my daughter to the Big Apple Circus. We saw the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. We visited the American Girl store for a new doll. The usual tourist stuff.
However, I had to uncover a New York secret. This is what sets me apart from the crowd. I worked many years in the garment center. I studied fashion at NYU. Fashion and styling is in my blood. I uncovered a hidden gem, a designer that flies under the radar, but not for long. My attraction to this designer is twofold. She is from Laguna Beach and has been a competitive boxer since she was 14 years old. Make no mistake, this very talented designer has worked with the very best including Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and John Varvatos. She has been featured in the New York Times Style Magazine as a line to look for this Fall. At the same time, in 2007 she was vying for the NYC Daily News Golden Gloves Title, that is considered by boxing aficionados to be one of the most elite titles. That night, Nellie Partow took home the title proving to those around her that there isn’t anything she couldn’t do if she set her mind to it. “Winning the Golden Gloves and getting to compete in front of a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden was incredible.” she says. She has applied that passion to designing her line. She uses all Italian fabrics, original colors, and everything is Manhattan made. She hangs next to The Row and Stella McCartney on the floor at Saks Fifth Avenue. Her pieces are amazing . I was amazed and fascinated. I finished an Ironman last year. I know what it takes to have a passion. I know what it takes to want something so badly. I am in awe of the type A personality that can do it all.
I bought a gorgeous dress from her Fall collection. I left with catalogues for spring and a preview of her newest collection. I am excited to be able to offer my clients unique pieces that are not available to the public. I love a good New York story.
